Ted Cruz Sounds Alarm as Texas Senate Race Tightens: “We’ve Got to Win”

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is warning Republicans that a crucial Senate race in his home state could be much closer than many expect, urging conservatives to unite and turn out as Election Day approaches.

Cruz described the contest as a “very real fight,” saying the race could be decided by only one or two percentage points. While he predicted that Republican Ken Paxton would win and that Texas would remain in Republican hands, Cruz stressed that victory is far from guaranteed.

His message to Republican voters was direct: turnout could determine the outcome.

Cruz Says Texas Race Is a “Very Real Fight”

During an interview, Cruz compared the current contest with his own 2018 Senate race against Democrat Beto O’Rourke, which he recalled as another extremely close election.

Cruz said the current political environment features strong Democratic enthusiasm alongside frustration among some Republican voters.

According to Cruz, Democrats opposed to President Donald Trump are highly motivated to vote, while some conservatives are unhappy with various issues and could choose to stay home.

“That’s a very simple math,” Cruz said, arguing that if one side turns out while the other stays home, the election could be lost.

For Cruz, that makes Republican voter turnout one of the most important factors in the race.

Cruz Urges Republicans to Rally Behind Ken Paxton

The senator acknowledged that the Republican primary was particularly difficult, describing it as a rough political battle between Paxton and Texas Sen. John Cornyn.

Cruz said the primary was also extraordinarily expensive, with more than $200 million in attack advertising targeting Paxton.

“That does damage,” Cruz said, warning that such a costly primary would inevitably “leave some bruises.”

Despite those divisions, Cruz argued that Republicans now need to put the primary behind them and unite around Paxton.

He acknowledged that Paxton may not be every Republican voter’s preferred candidate, but said the choice facing voters is ultimately about which political direction they want Texas to take.

Cruz Targets Democratic Candidate’s Positions

Cruz also launched a broad criticism of Democratic candidate Tallarico, arguing that his political views are too far to the left for Texas.

During the interview, Cruz cited positions and statements he attributed to Tallarico involving gender, taxation, immigration, environmental issues and capitalism.

Cruz argued that Tallarico’s political views would be more compatible with a heavily Democratic state than with Texas.

He also referenced a video he said showed Tallarico speaking with activists associated with the Sierra Club and discussing capitalism. Cruz used the remarks to portray his opponent as a progressive activist.

These descriptions represent Cruz’s characterization of his Democratic opponent and were presented by the senator as part of his case for keeping Texas under Republican control.

Texas Senate Race Could Have National Consequences

Cruz believes the importance of the Texas Senate race extends well beyond the state.

He warned that a Democratic victory could potentially contribute to a shift in control of the U.S. Senate, making the contest an important piece of the broader 2026 political landscape.

The senator said Republicans need to focus voters on issues such as taxes, regulations, jobs, border security and crime.

Cruz also pointed to other competitive Senate contests, saying Republicans face potential danger in several races across the country.

Republican Complacency Is a Major Concern

Cruz identified another challenge facing Republicans: complacency.

Because Republicans currently control the White House and Congress, he said some conservative voters may feel frustrated that more has not been accomplished or may simply assume their candidates will win.

Historically, Cruz noted, midterm elections can be difficult for the party in power because its supporters sometimes fail to turn out at the same levels.

That dynamic, he argued, could make the Texas Senate contest particularly unpredictable.

Cruz’s Message: Republicans Have to Show Up

Cruz’s central argument is that Republicans cannot afford to take Texas for granted.

Although he remains confident that Paxton can win, he repeatedly returned to the importance of mobilizing conservative voters and building unity after the bruising primary.

With the race potentially separated by only a few percentage points, even a relatively small change in voter turnout could have major consequences.

For Cruz, the stakes are not simply about choosing Texas’s next senator. He views the contest as part of a larger struggle over control of the Senate and the political direction of the country.
