Yamaha’s Helm Master Modes Increase Angling Opportunities

Right System for Successful Coastal Fishing

By Capt. Gus Cane

Successful coastal fishing depends on being in the right place at the right time. Thanks to digital electronics and responsive engine control, that proposition is a whole lot easier now. Yamaha’s Helm Master system has some new advancements that allow anglers to precisely position the boat to keep the baits in the strike zone for as long as possible. Here’s how they work:

The Helm Master’s SetPoint® function uses a dual GPS antenna to deliver three different modes of operation in conjunction with twin, triple or quad Yamaha outboards. The three modes are Stay Point®, Fish Point®, and Drift Point®. Each mode offers distinct advantages depending on the sea conditions and desired performance.

Stay Point mode uses position and heading to hold the boat over or near a specific spot. This is the best choice when seas are bigger since the engines produce higher RPMs to vector and maintain the position based on heading and orientation.

The Fish Point mode is a better choice when stealth is desired. In this function, the engine RPMs are reduced, which cuts back on noise and propeller turbulence. This allows the operator to keep the boat’s position set relative to structure or a fixed position like a buoy, channel marker or wreck. Using this mode, the bow can be pointed up wind or up current to hold the boat in place regardless of sea conditions.

Helm Master’s Drift Point setting is also a heading-oriented function. This option allows the operator to control the boat’s heading and orientation, so it stays in the desired alignment while drifting along a weed line, color change, or tidal rip.

Quick, simple maneuvers are easy in any of the three Set Point modes. Using the joystick toggle, each tap will move the boat 10 feet in that particular direction. So whether you want to shift fore or aft, port or starboard, it’s an easy adjustment to position the boat exactly where you want it to be—as close to the strike zone as possible and at precisely the right time. Yamaha’s Helm Master with joystick control and the advanced Set Point modes makes it easier to catch more fish.
